Your Guide to Booking a Courthouse Wedding in NYC
Planning a courthouse wedding in New York City? You’re in for an intimate and memorable experience in one of the most iconic cities in the world. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process, from obtaining your marriage license to saying “I do” at City Hall.
Step 1: Obtain Your Marriage License
Before you can get married in NYC, you’ll need to secure a marriage license. Here’s how:
Start Your Application Online: Complete the Marriage License application via the City Clerk’s Online Portal. This step saves time and ensures everything is ready before your appointment.
Schedule and Attend an Appointment: Both partners must appear together for an in-person or virtual appointment to finalize the application. This is required to complete the process.
Bring Valid Identification: Accepted forms of ID include a passport, U.S. driver’s license, or other government-issued photo ID.
Pay the Fee: The Marriage License fee is $35, payable by credit card or money order made out to the City Clerk.
Wait 24 Hours: New York State law requires a 24-hour waiting period before your marriage ceremony can take place.
Step 2: Schedule Your Marriage Ceremony
Once you have your license, the next step is booking your ceremony at City Hall:
Make an Appointment: Ceremonies at the NYC Marriage Bureau are by appointment only. You can book your slot through the Project Cupid website. Walk-ins are not permitted, so plan ahead!
Pay the Ceremony Fee: The cost for a civil ceremony is $25, payable by credit card or money order.
Bring a Witness: You’ll need at least one witness over the age of 18 to be present at your ceremony. They must also bring valid photo ID. If you don’t have a witness, don’t worry — as your photographer, I’m happy to step in and serve as one.

Arrive on Time: Be sure to arrive promptly at the designated time for your appointment. Bring your Marriage License, valid IDs, and your witness.
Say “I Do”: The ceremony is short and sweet, but it’s full of meaning. Afterward, you’ll receive your Certificate of Marriage Registration on the same day.
Celebrate!: Once your vows are exchanged, head to one of NYC’s iconic locations for photos and to celebrate. Whether it’s the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, or a trendy spot in DUMBO, I’ll be there to capture the joy of your special day.
